The Economic Characteristics of Local Goat Husbandry Projects in the Governorate of Swaida in Syria

Goat husbandry projects are widespread activities carried out in the Governorate of Swaida. However, the main objective of this research is to evaluate the economic aspect of these projects with a view to identifying the efficient use of the resources available to them. The research was carried out in the Governorate of Swaida in Syria in 2016. Preliminary data was collected from a random sample comprising 116 respondents by means of a questionnaire which involved personal interviews with goat breeders. The research was based on descriptive statistical analysis and some quantitative indicators for economic evaluation. The evaluation involved three production holdings based on the size of the herd. The results showed that the third holding was economically superior with a production capacity between 43 and 200 heads, with an operational ratio of 0. 31, break point of 8, a ratio of revenues to costs of 3. 18, and a positive value for the following index: the net income index stood at 30,401. 5 Syrian Pounds per head. The return on investment index was 218. 38%, and the gross margin index was 32,910. 91 Syrian Pounds per head. The study concluded, in the recommendations, directing efforts to increase the acquisition of goats among breeders. Thus facilitating the introduction of modern technologies, production monitoring and follow- up production and gaining knowledge about the productive efficiency of the herd. It is also important to maintain vegetation and permanently monitor feed needs and State intervention to control prices and prevent trade monopoly, including the development of rural industries for livestock products and the promotion of agricultural manufacturing facilities in production areas.
