This study sought to identify and diagnose the challenges and problems facing the marketing of vegetables and fruits in the northern West Bank governorates (Jenin, Nablus, Tubas, Qalqilya and Tulkarm). The study also aimed at exploring the viewpoints of the study sample towards these challenges and problems in light of some variables, and concluding solutions to be offered to stakeholders. The study population consisted of people directly related to the marketing and production of vegetables and fruits. It included farmers, wholesalers, retailers, directors of chambers of commerce, directors of agricultural directorates, and managers of agricultural marketing societies in the governorates.
Random Accidental sample was used, and consisted of 606 respondents. The descriptive analytical method was adopted. After the distribution and collection of questionnaires, they were coded to the computer and SPSS was used to analyze the data for finding results.
The study found that the degree of the challenges and problems related to the production and marketing of vegetables and fruits were moderate, yet the degree of the problems related to their prices and distribution were high. There were differences in the responses due to all the variables of the study sample.
The study presented a number of recommendations and solutions, the most important of which are; the need for protecting the Palestinian product; the need for enhancing government support for farmers; the need for activating the role of the fund to prevent risks and provide insurance; the need for developing an agricultural strategic plan in each governorate; the need for organizing the work of central markets and expanding their area; the need for providing support to marketing staff operating in the markets; and finally, the need for adhering to the instructions of the Agriculture Ministry in relation to the safe use and types of pesticides in agriculture.
