Feminization of Poverty: Causes and Effects, A Survey Study on Villages in the North of Jericho and Jordan Valley Governorate in Palestine

Objectives: This study investigates the phenomenon of the feminization of poverty in the villages of northern Jericho Governorate.
Methodology: The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach. A random sample of 117 households was selected, including families classified as poor and those in extreme poverty.
Results: The findings reveal a significant positive correlation between the causes of feminization of poverty and its resulting social and economic impacts. Among the organizational causes, the lack of government support programs directed toward housewives was the most influential. Socially, the illness or disability of the male breadwinner emerged as a critical factor, while economically, the most notable impact was the increased participation of women in informal sector employment.
Conclusion: Development of social protection policies that are gender-sensitive and responsive to the needs of rural housewives, and the provision of equal opportunities for education and vocational training for women. Additionally, the study emphasizes the importance of empowering labor unions to advocate for women’s rights in both Palestinian and Israeli labor markets.
