The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of Irlen’s Overlays and
a teaching program to improve reading ability among dyslexic students. The
sample of study consisted of (30) male and female students who were chosen in
a purposeful way from the fifth elementary grade who are enrolled in resource
rooms in the Amman private Directorate. The sample was distributed into
three groups selected randomly: two experimental groups and one control
group with (10) students in each. In order to fulfill the objectives of the study
a teaching program was prepared by the researchers to be used with the
second experimental group and a Reading Rate Test to be used as a pre and
post- test after achieving its validity and reliability. The first experimental
group used the colored overlays only, while the second experimental group
used the colored overlays in addition to a teaching program to improve
their reading ability. A post- test of reading rate test were applied on the
three groups and their results were as follows: There was no significant
difference at the level (a= 0.05) between the first experimental group that
used only Irlen colored overlays and the control group in improving literacy.
There was a significant difference at the level (a= 0.05) between the second
experimental group (Irlen colored overlays with educational program)
and the control group in improving literacy. The experimental group had
a higher mean. There was a significant difference at the level (a= 0.05)
between the group used Irlen colored overlays and the group used Irlen
colored transparencies with educational program in improving literacy. The
group used Irlen colored overlays with educational program had a higher
mean. According to the results of the study, the researchers have come up
with recommendations such as: studies and researches should be made at a
larger scale targeting the different categories of special needs to have more
accurate feedback and results.
