Towards A Social Emotional Learning: New Trends in Education

The article deals with the current importance of social and emotional
competence in schools; new trends in educational psychological literature
calls for the development of students’ social and emotional skills as well as
for development of their academic skills and the acquisition of knowledge
and information. Students’ social and emotional ability are sufficiently linked
to self- awareness, social awareness, and managing emotions and behavior.
This articles points out to one side of social awareness that is empathy, and yet
to another side which is associated with emotions and behavior management
that is self- regulation. These two sides reduce bullying and aggressive
behavior among students in schools. The student, who shows a high level of
empathy and self- regulation, reduces his/ her aggressive behavior as he/ she
is trying to understand the other party, and sympathy with the other party’s
sorrows and sufferings. In addition, he/ she controls and regulates his/ her
behavior in a way to help him/ her in his/ her academic achievement. Such
as: reduced activity, learning, attention, and follow the instructions and the
organization of work tools. The role of the school lies in helping students to
be emotionally involved with one another, take each other’s point of view into
consideration and organize ideas, emotions and behavior in different social
situations within the school environment.
