Mathematical Thinking and its Relationship to Attitudes towards Mathematics among the Tenth Grade Students in the Public Schools of Tulkarem Governorate

The aim of this study is to investigate the level of mathematical thinking
and its relationship to attitudes towards mathematics among the tenth grade
students in the public schools of Tulkarem Governorate in the light of the
variables of the gender of students and their achievement in mathematics.
The study sample consisted of 219 male and female students: 102 male
students and 117 female students.For achieving the aim of the study, the
researcher designed two data collection tools: Mathematical Thinking Test
which consisted of 6 questions and a questionnaire to study the students’
attitudes towards mathematics, which consisted of 20 items, whose reliability
and validity had been investigated.The results of the study showed that the
level of mathematical thinking of the tenth grade students scored (57.73
%) which was low, while the mean of the students’ attitudes towards
mathematics scored (59.4 %) , which was around average.The results also
showed a statistically significant differences in the level of mathematical
thinking among the tenth grade students due to the variable of achievement
in mathematics in favor of those of high achievements.In addition, there were
statistically significant differences among the means of students’ attitudes
towards mathematics due to the variable of achievement in mathematics
in favor of those of high achievement.There was a statistically significant
relationship between mathematical thinking and the tenth grade students’
attitudes towards mathematics and this relationship was positive.A number
of recommendations were provided in light of the findings.
