Abstract

This study aims to explore the level of prevalence of major depressive disorder among a sample of Jordanian universities students and explore whether the behavioral inhibition is a predictor of major depressive disorder. The size of the study sample is 1270 male and female students from Jordanian universities. To achieve the objectives of the study, AMBI was used for behavioral inhibition and a major depressive disorder scale was developed. The results of the study show that the prevalence of major depressive disorder among students is 11.97%. There are differences in the prevalence of major depressive disorder in students due to the gender variable, in favor of females. The results also show that the total level of the students behavioral inhibition come at a moderate level, and all dimensions come within the moderate level. There are differences in the level of behavioral inhibition as a whole. The dimension of fear inhibition in universities students is due to the gender variable, in favor of females, and the dimension of low sociability is in favor of males. There are no differences in the dimensions of behavioral inhibition (none- approach, risk avoidance) due to the gender variable. The results also show that the behavioral inhibition and the gender variable have no predictive ability of major depressive disorder among universities students. Based on the results of this research, the researchers made a set of recommendations, including that universities must design websites and electronic programs in order to educate university students on how to spend their spare time during home quarantine.
