The Effectiveness of the Mental Arithmetic Strategy on Working Memory Capacity Among Students with Difficulties Learning Arithmetic in Ramallah and al-Bireh Governorate

Objectives: The study aimed to reveal the effectiveness of the mental arithmetic strategy on working memory capacity among students with difficulties learning arithmetic in Ramallah and al-Bireh Governorate.
Methods: In order to achieve the goal of the study, the researcher used the experimental method with a quasi-experimental design,where the study was applied to a sample consisting of 40 4th grade students. The sample was divided into two groups, one of which was experimental and consisted of 20 students، and the other was a control group that consisted of 20 students. To achieve the purposes of this study، the researcher used an achievement test in the arithmetic lessons found in the arithmetic book for the fourth grade. The test consisted of essay and objective questions، and the objective questions consisted of 10 multiple-choice and essay-type items.
Results: The results of the study showed that there were statistically significant differences at the significance level (a ≤ 0.05) between the average scores of the experimental group and the control group due to the teaching method (mental arithmetic strategy and the usual method) in the total score of the achievement test in favor of the experimental group، and the existence of a statistically significant relationship between the teaching strategy And working memory capacity for students with arithmetic difficulties in the experimental group.
Conclusions: In light of the previous results , the researcher recommended giving arithmetic lessons to various levels using the mental arithmetic strategy ,and working to train students to use the mental arithmetic strategy during the students’ basic education stages.
