Self-Compassion and its Relationship to Self-Esteem Among Wives of Prisoners with High Sentences in West Bank Governorates

Abstract

Objectives: The study aimed to investigate the levels of self-compassion and self-esteem, and their relationship. The study targeted a sample of wives of prisoners, reaching 95 participants through convenience sampling.

Methods: The study employed a descriptive-correlational method and utilized SPSS for data analysis

Results:  The results indicated that the level of self-compassion was at 63.0%, with an average rating. The mean scores for participants' responses on the self-compassion scale ranged from 3.72 to 2.55. Self-kindness ranked first with a high rating. The level of self-esteem was at 75.5% with an average rating. There were no statistically significant differences in self-compassion and its domains, attributed to educational level. Except for self-kindness which wasn’t influenced by educational level. Differences were found in the domain of self-kindness favoring employment. The results also showed no statistically significant differences in self-esteem related to educational level and employment. There is a positive correlation between self-compassion and self-esteem, with a Pearson correlation coefficient of .545.

Conclusions: The study recommends developing counseling programs to enhance self- compassion and self esteem among wives of prisoners with high sentences in West Bank governorates.
