Abstract

Objectives: The current study aimed to reveal the level of psychological depression among battered women in the Gaza governorates.

Methodology: To achieve the study's objectives, the researcher used the Beck Depression Inventory (1984), and the study sample consisted of 387 battered women in the Gaza governorates.

Results: The results of the study showed that the total score of the depression scale had an arithmetic mean of 33.315, indicating severe depression. The results also showed statistically significant differences attributed to the citizenship variable, with citizen women experiencing higher depression levels than refugee women. Additionally, there were statistically significant differences related to marital status, favoring married women, and educational level, favoring illiterate women who are not proficient in reading and writing. The results also indicated statistically significant differences attributed to income level, with very low-income women showing higher depression levels. Furthermore, statistically significant differences were found related to family nature, favoring those who live in extended families.

Conclusions: The study recommended combating silence and not tolerating violence, especially by women themselves, raising their awareness to not accept violence directed at them, and encouraging them to report any abuse they experience. It also emphasized the importance of making appropriate decisions and taking responsibility for them by providing necessary support, improving awareness of their rights and dignity, and providing psychological and social skills to prevent and deal with violence. Additionally, the study suggested conducting further research to determine the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy for depression and other disorders affecting abused women, and improving treatment programs based on the findings.
