Level of Commitment of Education Faculties to the Regulations and Bylaws of Postgraduate Studies when Selecting Thesis Supervisors and Examiners at the Universities in Gaza Strip.

Abstract

This study aimed at identifying the extent of faculties of education commitment

to the rules of High Graduate Department in selecting thesis supervisors

and examiners in the universities in Gaza Strip. It also aimed to identify

the statistical differences in the supervisors' and examiners' viewpoints

attributed to the following variables: (University- educational degree- experience

in supervision and discussion).

The sample of the study was (68) supervisors and examiners. The researcher

used a questionnaire as a tool for the current study. The findings of

the study were as follows: the importance of forming the Examiners Committees

comes first with a general average (26.49); the second was the selection

of the supervisor and his/her educational qualifications with general average

(26.26); the third in importance was the role of High Graduate Department

with a general average (26.25); and the least in importance was the examiners'

educational qualifications with a general average (21.01). In addition,

the study revealed 1) that there were no statistical significant differences attributed

to the faculties of education commitment to the suggested criteria

of selecting theses' supervisors and examiners, 2) there were statistical significant

differences attributed to the educational degree variable between the

professor and the Assistant professor in favor of the professor and there were

no differences among the other degrees, 3) there were no statistical significant

differences attributed to the years of experience in supervision and discussion,

4) there were no statistical significant differences attributed to the university,

educational degree, years of experience variables towards the High Graduate

Department role in selecting theses' supervisors and examiners.

In light of the results of this study, the researcher recommends that: 1)

It is necessary to departments of education to abide by the rules of selecting

supervisors and forming examiners committees in the faculties of education,

2) activating the role of the High Graduate Department and the councils

of departments and faculties in the selection process of examiners and

supervisors, 3) and a constant reviewing and evaluating of the rules of the

High Graduate Department and the current criteria to develop them to reach

both international and Arab standards.
