The present study aimed to investigate the effects of modification of
negative self-statements and a training program on communication skills
in the modification of insecure attachment styles among a sample of
adolescents. The population of the study consisted of (143) students in the
ninth and tenth grades in one of the primary schools in Irbid governorate. To
achieve the purposes of the study, the researchers developed an attachment
scale, which consisted of (24) items. Based on the scores of these students on
the attachment scale, the sample of the study was selected, which consisted
of (30) students, who were assigned into three groups: Two experimental
groups, and one control group. Each group consisted of (10) students. One
of the experimental groups received a counseling program on modification
of negative self-statement, and the second experimental group received a
training program on communication skills, while the control group did not
receive any treatment program. Results showed that modification of negative
self-statements was more effective than not having treatment on the secure
attachment style in the post-test and the follow-up test, and it was also more
effective than no treatment on the anxious attachment style in the follow-up
test, and more effective than communication skills on the secure attachment
style in the follow-up test. On the other hand, the communication skills
program was more effective than no treatment on the secure attachment style
in the follow-up test.
