THE ROLE OF ECONOMIC POLICIES IN COMBATING POVERTY IN MAURITANIA
Keywords:
Economic Policies, Combating Poverty, MauritaniaAbstract
Since its independence, Mauritania adopts ambitious economic policies
to get the country out of underdevelopment that prevailed in the country just
after independence. These policies continually realize a significant portion
of objectives until the advent of debt problem in Mauritania, like many other
developing countries, in the 80s of the 20th century. This situation forced
Mauritania to adopt broad structural reform programs which worsened
poverty of its population to a rate of 56% in 1990. At that time, Mauritanian
and global economic policies, aimed to reduce or even to eradicate poverty.
These policies, known as Strategic Framework for Poverty Reduction,
achieved some positive goals. However, it is not expected that a significant
portion of these objectives will be achieved by 2015. It is therefore important
to review these objectives and their mechanisms of implementation to be
more efficient.
