Distance education is an integrated educational system which provides
the students with programs different than those of the traditional systems. It
uses more flexible teaching methods and modern technologies which allow
those who live far away from campuses to gain their college education. This
educational concept flourished in America and Europe, then was adopted by
Arab countries. That does not mean that our Islamic civilization had did not
have similar practices to facilitate the process of education.
This research casts the light on the historical roots of distance education
to clarify the most important concepts related to the field, the actual practices,
and the future of the concept.
The research includes an introduction, and three themes:
