The Attitudes of the Academic Staff at Al-Quds Open University towards the Implementation of Total Quality Management

This study aims at identifying the attitudes of the academic staff at Al-Quds
Open University towards the implementation of total quality management,
and whether there are mean differences in their attitudes that can be attributed
to these variables: academic qualification, professional status, program and
years of experience at the university. A simple random sample ( represented
25%) was chosen from the part and full time academic supervisors; this sample
was also distributed into strata according to professional status, academic
qualification and program. It was found that the total number of academic
supervisors during the first semester of the academic year 2005/2006 was
( 1782) ; ( 309) of them were full timers. A questionnaire prepared by the
researcher was used for the purpose of this study. This instrument includes
five dimensions: quality culture, stakeholders, labor force and both academic
and administrative climates. ( 450) copies of this 43 - item questionnaire were
distributed ; ( 388) copies were returned ; ( 13) copies were dropped and the
remaining number was ( 375) copies.
After analyzing the responses using SPSS , the following basic results
were concluded:
1. The attitudes of the members of the academic staff at Al-Quds Open University
towards implementing were positive and high.
2. There are no statistically significant mean differences ( α = 0.05) between
the means of the academic staff attitudes towards the implementing of
total quality management due to the variables of academic qualifications
, professional status and program.
3. There are statistically significant mean differences (α = 0.05) between the
means of the academic staff's attitudes at Al-Quds Open University towards
implementing the total quality management that can be attributed to years
of teaching experience, and the dimensions of the employed scale.
The researcher indicates a set of recommendations related to the necessity
of preparing special guides for implementing the quality system , spreading
quality culture and giving training a priority before starting the implementation
of the total quality management.
