Motives and Obstacles of Using Internet among Al-Quds Open University Employees during the Academic Year of 2002/ 2003

Abstract

This study aims at identifying the motives and obstacles of internet use

facing Al_Quds Open University employees during the academic year of 2002/

2003 ‚the availability of the requirements for internet use and the level of its

use .

The population of this study consists of (490) employees (189 academic

supervisors and 301 administrator ) and a stratified random sample of 50%

(counted 224 employees ) was chosen . A questionnaire was administrated to

the subjects and only (215) subjects responded to the questionnaire ‚ and the

data were analyzed by computer using percentages ‚ means ‚ and one-way

ANOVA.

This study reveals that (74.4%) of the sample members have their own

personal computers ‚ (87.4%) Know the basics of computer and internet use

and (68.5%) have computers at their offices . It also reveals that (62.4%) of the

sample members could use internet independently (37.5%) of the study sample

need others assistance and (52.2%) of them use it up to 3 hours (37.6%) need

other per week ‚ The results indicate that the most important motives for internet

use are mainly in the field of scientific research ‚recent events and political

changes in the world ‚ cultural information connected with various aspects of

life and knowledge of others, experiences in different walks of life. Moreover ‚

the findings of this study reveal that there are no significant differences in the

motives of internet use due to qualifications‚ statistical differences in motives

could be attributed to the variable of age .

In considering obstacles ‚ this study reveals that the most important

obstacles are the lack of available time ‚ unavailability of credit cards to facilitate

pay service and inability of some employees to possess personal computers .

Means of the responses show no significant statistical differences in obstacles

due to age, qualifications, work place and specialization .

In the light of this study ‚ the researcher recommended that the university

administration should:

1 ) Spread internet use to all administrators and academic supervisors in all

educational regions.

2 ) Organize obligatory training courses for all employees in the fields of

internet ‚ computer and electronic mail to reap the benefits of this service.

3 ) Make available general subscriptions in international libraries as well as

Arabic and foreign periodicals.
