Social Support and its Relationship with Life Stressors among the Palestinian Prisoners’ Wives: The Case Study of Jenin Governorate

The study aims at identifying the relationship between social support and life stressors among Palestinian prisoners' wives, as well as to explore the differences in the variables according to the variables of wife's age and prionser’s family income. The study also aims to explore the role of social support in predicting the level of life stress. The researcher used the descriptive approach, and designed a tool for measuring social support and life stress among the wives. After its was validated and checked for its reliability, it was applied on a sample of 71 Palestinian prisoners' wives in Jenin governorate. The results shows that there is a negative relationship between the social support and the level of psychological stress. It also shows that the level of social support scored a moderate level. Moreover, the study shows that prisoners’ wives suffer from moderate life stressors.
The results of the study shows that there are no statistically significant differences at the level of (α ≤ 0.05) in the level of social support provided to wives of Palestinian prisoners. While there are significant differences in the level of social support according to the variable of monthly income of the family and the dimensions of emotional support and cognitive support, in favor of families who have high income. There are no statistically significant differences regarding material support. The results of the study also shows that there are no statistically significant differences in the level of life stressors among the wives of the Palestinian prisoners in accordance with their age.
Regarding the role of social support in predicting the level of life pressures of prisoners' wives in Jenin governorate, social support and its components contributed to predicting the level of life stress and its components, as it was found that the contribution of social support to the level of social life stress is 20.6% and it’s 19.4% for economic stress, and (39.3%) for the health stress and 30.9% for the psychological stress.
