Learning School Mathematics: Two Approaches to the 9th Grade Textbook

Although there are many international studies about the nature of mathematics school and its philosophy and the role of language and communication in teaching and learning mathematics, local studies are rare. This study explores the nature of mathematics and mathematics discourse in school mathematics textbooks, and the mathematical activities students engage in. The verbal and visual content analysis methodology is used, adopting Alshwaikh and Morgan’s approach and MDI Tx approach developed by Adler and Ronda. Results show that mathematics is presented in formal and abstract ways, and the role of the learner of mathematics tends to be more as a scribbler than a thinker. There is a need to reconsider the nature of mathematical activities as well as the role of the learners of mathematics in a way that shows the human nature of doing mathematics. Furthermore, there is a need for more local studies to look at the communication aspect of teaching and learning mathematics.
