Abstract

This study sought to measure the impact of self-learning on improving the reading comprehension skills of the students at the seventh grade. The literal and deductive levels in the Arabic language  were considered a model for the study. The study population consisted of seventh grade students in the Directorate of Education in the Giza District. The sample consisted of  42 female students from al-Qastal region from two schools, selected through the intentional method, due to the availability of one class at each school. The sample was divided into two groups

An experimental group and a control group. Self-learning was applied on the experimental group and contained 24 students from al-Qastal Secondary School for Girls.

As for the students of the control group they followed the conventional method of studying and the group consisted of 18 students from the Ja`far al-Tayyar Basic School For Girls. To achieve the goal of the study, the researchers edited three reading texts according to the self-learning skill, dedicated for the Arabic Language course for the students at the seventh grade, during the academic year 2016/2017. The researchers provided the Arabic language teacher with a guide to implement the experiment, and a booklet for the student that includes the edited texts. The researchers also designed a pre-test and a post-test, consisting of 25 multiple-choice questions, which included reading comprehension skills on the literal and deductive levels. Validity and Stability of the study tools were verified according to the approved standards. The results of the study showed that there were statistically significant differences in favor of students at the experimental group in the results of the tests of the reading comprehension skills as a whole, and at the literal and deductive levels. The study recommended the need for implementing self-learning skills in the Arabic Language course, and promoting the belief in the students' abilities to achieve the required results.
