Abstract

Fighting against poverty and hunger and achieving food security for

mankind is not only a fundamental demand of each State, but also a basic

goal for the international community to access especially at this critical

time which is characterized by global economic recession and major

financial crisis that endanger or jeopardize the safety and stability of the

world and leave millions of poor and hungry people struggling for a source

of income which provide them with basic food and security. This research

addresses the causes of widespread of hunger, poverty and food shortages

in many contemporary societies. It clarifies how Islam deals with these hot

issues that cause troubles for millions of people according to statistics of

international organizations working in this field. The research plan consists

of: introduction, three pivotal parts, conclusion, and recommendations. The

introduction covers the importance of research, its objectives, the research

plan and previous studies. In part one, the meaning of famine, its various

names, consequences and reasons that stand behind and the concept of food

security in Islam and man made economics are verified and clarified. In part

two, Positive impacts of lack of food and negative influence of its surplus

or abundant are highlighted. In part three, causes of the spread of famine,

Islamic legislations as tools that reduce or contribute to solutions for this

matter from Islamic and economic perspectives are extensively discussed.

Finally the researcher summarizes the research results and presents some

important recommendations of interest.
