This research deals with the expressions of (the familiar place) in the
poetry of Mahmoud Darwish particularly in his volume of poetry titled «Why
Did You Leave the Horse Alone?». The researcher tried to demonstrate this
issue from the thematic and aesthetic points of view.
In the first part, the researcher dealt with the aesthetic aspects of the
place for the poet by surveying the components of the place aspects from
the physical, personal, social, economic, national background and how much
attached to the poet's identity in spite of his early departure from this place.
In the second part, the researcher discussed deeply the aesthetic aspects
of the place through the analysis of the linguistic expressions used in the
structure of the poem such as personification and embodiment. He also
studied the sound rhythm in the work.
The researcher concluded that the poet has expressed his deep love for
the «familiar place» as it enabled him to find his true self which has been
taken away from him and designified.
