Abstract

This study dealt with two main dimensions preceded by an introduction

clarifying the theoretical originality of the concept of collective conscience

as perceived by Durkiem and Charles Colley. The first dimension tackled

the implications of the collective conscience in the Palestinian cultural

system. The researcher linked this concept with some cultural components

such as literature, popular proverbs, poetry and social life in its entirety

within a historical period, which the Palestinian society experienced. The

second dimension clarified the decline observed in the Palestinian collective

conscience under the state of division which the Palestinian society is living

and which influenced the overall social interactions. This influence was not

confined to the Palestinian political elite, but has extended to the social

relationships within the Palestinian social system.
