Abstract

This research deals with the different names of Jerusalem City with

reference to Lesan Al Arab. Jerusalem city, in fact, has several names and of

them were given to the city by kings, nations, tribes and others have religious

connotations. These names were mentioned in Lesan Al Arab and the rest

were mentioned in other sources. The names of Jerusalem in Lesan Al Arab,

have different meaning s. the source of these names is the Holy Quran, Al

Hadith, the poetry and the saying of the Arabs. and the Dictionaries Adopted

by the tongue. These names developed in time and scholars and thinkers kept

on amending the name till they agreed upon the most famous and well known

name, Jerusalem

Jerusalem occupies a very important place in history because it is the

city of peace, the land of prophets and the place where Prophet Mohammad

flew to from Mecca. Moreover, its importance also lies from the fact that it

is considered as the land of civilizations which left their marks upon the city

and its culture giving Jerusalem different names. Due to the importance of

the city in the of the conflict between the civilization of force and the force

of civilization as well as the cities importance for the researchers of the past

and the present , the city was given a number of different names in Lesan Al

Arab.
