Internet Addiction and Its Relationship to Mental Health During the Distance Learning Period Among a Sample of University Students in the Sultanate of Oman

Abstract

This study aims to reveal Internet addiction and mental health levels during the distance-learning period among a sample of university students in the Sultanate of Oman. This research also studies the relationship between Internet addiction and mental health and the differences according to the variables: Gender, Internet strength, and GPA. The researchers followed the descriptive approach to answer the study questions, and the sample consisted of 791 undergraduate students.  Two scales are applied to the study sample: Internet addiction scale and the Mental Health Scale of Sayed Yousef. Moreover, the validity and reliability of the scales are verified. The results show that Internet addiction level is medium, and the mental health level is good. Moreover, there is an inverse relationship between Internet addiction and mental health; however, there are no statistical differences between the level of Internet addiction and the variables of gender and GPA. Furthermore, there are differences between Internet addiction and Internet strength in favor of weak network, whereas there is no relationship between mental health and GPA. Furthermore, the results show differences between mental health and the two variables in favor of males and a strong network.
