The Private Schools in the City of Hebron during the British Mandate (1920- 1948)

Objectives: This study explores the role of private schools in Hebron during the British Mandate, focusing on their contribution to basic education and addressing gaps caused by British colonial policies. The Mandate's education system marginalized Arab students, particularly those from middle and low-income families. Local communities, supported by civil society organizations, the Supreme Islamic Council, and individual initiatives, worked to establish private schools to fill these gaps.
Methodology: The study utilized historical, descriptive, and analytical approaches to collect and analyze research materials from primary sources.
Results: Hebron’s residents, with the support of civil society organizations, worked diligently to establish and maintain private schools despite significant challenges. The Mandate's policies prioritized Jewish education, leaving Arab students at a disadvantage. Financial constraints led to the closure of many schools, but these institutions emerged as symbols of resilience and resistance, using education as a tool to combat colonial oppression.
