Muslim Ethics in Warfare: Salah Al-Din Al -Ayyubi as a Model (d. 589 AH / 1193 CE)

Objectives: This study addresses a topic that has been the subject of debate across various circles throughout history, extending to the present day: the ethical conduct of Muslims during their wars with their enemies.
This study relied on primary sources from Saladin’s era and supplemented them with modern studies and perspectives on the topic.
Methodology: The analytical and descriptive historical method, with the aim of analyzing the moral values of Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi and their impact on the Crusades.
Results: The research concluded that Islamic principles include fundamental guidelines that emphasize respecting and preserving human dignity in all contexts, including warfare. These principles serve as a framework for Muslims in combat across all times and places. Additionally, it was evident that Saladin’s approach to war was deeply rooted in Islamic doctrine, as he adhered to Islamic principles even when it may have put him or his fellow Muslims at a disadvantage.
Conclusion: It has become evident that the principles and core foundations of Islam are based on pillars that emphasize the respect and preservation of human dignity in general. The field of warfare serves as a clear testament to this. Salah al-Din (Saladin) was one of the prominent Muslim figures in this regard.
