Distress Tolerance and its Relation to Psychological Security Among a Sample of Lebanese Citizens

Objectives: The current study aims to examine distress tolerance and psychological security in a sample of Lebanese citizens, determine the nature of the relationship between these two variables, and uncover any potential differences among sample members attributed to age, gender, and educational attainment.
Methods: To achieve the objectives of this study, the Distress Tolerance Scale prepared by "Simon and Gaher" (2005) and translated by the researcher (2016), and the Psychological Security Scale developed by Shoucair (2005), were applied to a sample of 331 Lebanese citizens. The descriptive correlational approach was used, and descriptive statistics methods including arithmetic means, standard deviations, percentages, t-test, Cronbach's alpha coefficient, and ANOVA test were adopted.
Results: The findings revealed that there is a positive substantial relationship between distress tolerance and psychological security in the study sample; there are significant gender-based differences in distress tolerance favoring women and no significant differences between men and women in psychological security; Individuals between the ages of 18 and 40 exhibit significant differences in distress tolerance, while those 51 and older exhibit significant differences in psychological security. Education attainment does not significantly affect either psychological security or psychological distress tolerance among the study sample.
Recommendations: The necessity of designing and implementing psychological counseling programs aiming to enhance the strengths of Lebanese citizens, and children in particular, which contributes to shaping psychological security as the basic pillar of citizens’ mental health and thus the prosperity of Lebanese community in general.
