"Istishab al-Hal" as a Foundation in the Codification of Arabic Grammar

AbstractEarly Arab grammarians relied on several principles to establish the rules of Arabic grammar, including al-sama‘, al-qiyas, and istishab al-hal, among others. Some of these principles and proofs were clear and unambiguous, while others, notably istishab al-hal, were shrouded in some obscurity. Given that linguistic sciences were primarily developed to serve the Qur’an, many of these principles, including istishab al-hal, are shared between Arabic grammar and Islamic jurisprudence. However, this principle remains inadequately addressed in the works of early grammarians such as Al-Khalil, Sibawayh. Although some researchers have attempted to clarify this principle, it still requires further studies and articles to enrich and elucidate its meaning.
Objectives: This study aims to shed light on the concept of istishab al-hal, explore scholars’ perspectives on it, clarify some of its issues.
Methodology: The researcher employed descriptive and analytical approaches.
Results: The study reached several key conclusions, most notably: it clarified the concept of istishab al-ḥāl, defined its position among the principles of grammar and jurisprudence, and presented the various perspectives of grammarians on this notion.
Conclusion: This study highlights a significant issue and a crucial principle in establishing Arabic grammar rules. Istishab al-hal entails adhering to a previously established ruling in cases of doubt regarding its continuation in the present or future.
