The Effect of Using Text Messaging On Arabic Spelling among University Students

Abstract

The study aimed at investigating the effect of mobile phones text messaging on Arabic spelling among a sample of Al Mujama› University female students. the sample of the study consisted of (22) female university students selected from the different specializations for the study population. To achieve the aim of the study, the content of some mobile based text messages were analyzed using the appropriate statistical procedures (frequencies, percentages... etc.) . Results of the study indicated a negative effect for using mobile text messaging on Arabic spelling among university students. Results of the study indicated differences in the effect for using mobile text messaging on Arabic spelling among university students due to specialization, in favor of scientific specialization students compared to humanitarian specializations students. Results of the study indicated differences in the effect for using mobile text messaging on Arabic spelling among university students due to educational level, in favor of first year students compared to the remaining university levels. In light of the results, several recommendations were discussed.
