Abstract

Prisons are built to achieve the state,s higher goal i.e doing justice among

members of the nation. This is carried out through imprisoning anyone who

violates the laws of the comunity. Prisons are usually classified according to

crime commited or according to the prisoner,s sex.Egypt experienced various

kinds of prisons some of which were allocated to the high-ranking statesmen,

while others used to receive criminals, in addition to women prisons.

The available data during the mamluks period points out that the prisoners

suffering was reflected in two ways. The first one was the bad health conditios

and bad management of prisons. The second one was that prisoners were

subject to various sorts of torturing such as beating, nailing, squeezing, bone

≠ breaking burning, etc. The mamluk state exceeded all ethical, religious,

and human laws which asked for keeping the human dignity, and thus it

practiced the most dictatorial policies towards prisoners.
