Evaluating Listening Skills Performance of Children in Kindergarten by Using Narrative Text

The aim of this study is to identify the basic listening skills needed for
the children of Kindergarten and their level in listening skills.The sample
consists of 35 children.The researcher used the listening skills test prepared
by Alswafy (2001) and the listening skills for Kindergarten prepared by the
researcher.The data were analyzed using SPSS- 17 statistical package for
social sciences and the “Likert scale” test (T) .
The first question, Auditory Discrimination includes selecting words
that start with the audio, discrimination between formulas individuals
and plural, the distinction between wording of masculine and feminine,
discrimination coloring, understand the meaning of words audio from
context of the text, and distinction between Arab voices converged in director.
The second question is about the skills of classification such as following
sequence in presentation of text of story is divided into parts, correlation
between words, images, audio, installation of a word from a group
of letter sounds, the details and in accordance with relay in story.
The third question is about the skills to draw main idea such as the selection of an
appropriate title for a story, understand ideas and details heard by preschool.
The fourth question is measuring the deductive thinking skills to identify
experiences of child learned to speak and to complete the text of the story
audio. Finally, the fifth includes content and skill assessment to judge the
sincerity and the reasons for preference of the story heard and to comment on
the text and express an opinion.
Using Likert levels of performance shows that children who received
(63.4%) .The skill of classification comes second by (50 %) , while the skill to
draw the basic idea received (55.8%) .Thinking deductive is (60.0%) , while
the skill of judging the truthfulness reached (63.2%) .
The level of performance of children is weak in the top listening skills
with the exception of the main skill of auditory discrimination.
