Challenges Facing Full-Time Academic Supervisors at Al-Quds Open University When Using the Academic Portal

This study aims to identify the difficulties that the full- time academic
supervisors at Al- Quds Open University encounter and which might impair
their use of the university academic portal.
The main question the study attempts to answer is:
What are the difficulties which the full-time academic supervisors face
and which hinder their use of the academic portal?
This question entails some other related questions:
- What are the technical difficulties?
- What are the personal difficulties?
- What are the financial difficulties?
- What are the difficulties related to motivation?
- What are the difficulties related to career development?
- What are the difficulties related to communication?
- How can the instances of these difficulties be arranged in a top-down
manner according to their total difficulty level?
- What is the highest level difficulty for each instance of those related
toproblems in using the academic portal and arranged also in a topdown
manner?
The study population consists of the directors of the educational districts
and centers, their academic and administrative assistants and all the fulltime
academic supervisors at Al-Quds Open University in Palestine ( West
Bank) during the year 2004/2005. Each one was asked to respond to a
questionnaire. Out of (202) being their total, (172) filled questionnaire forms
were submitted.
To realize the aims, the researchers used the questionnaire that they
produced by themselves after making sure of its validity and reliability,
depending on the literature in this field.
The questionnaire consists of (68) items distributed amongst (8) fields,
and the answer scale includes (5) answer levels: ( strongly agree/ agree/
neutral / oppose / strongly oppose).
To find answers for the questions, the researchers calculated the mean
and percentage for each item, the total grade for each of its aspects and the
total grade for all aspects.
The researchers concluded that there existed some administrative and
technical difficulties as well as problems related to motivation and career
development .
These difficulties negatively affect the academic supervisors use of the
academic portal. Finally, the study arrived at a number of recommendations
in the light of the findings obtained.
