The Usage of Absorbing Markov Chains as One Method of Stochastic Processes
Keywords:
Stochastic processes, Markov processes, Markov chains, probability matrix.Abstract
This study explored the usage of absorbing Markov chains as one
method of stochastic processes. This method is one of the best methods used
in analyzing the movement of student during the stages of their study, and then
estimating the required time needed to get their degrees. The aim is to link
higher education output to the society needs. The study also focused on the
theoretical and applied side of absorbing Markov chains and then applied the
data on the students of Engineering College in the Islamic university during
the period (2000 – 2011) . Through this study, we observed that the expected
overall graduation rate is 76. 4% and after a time period of 3 years, 2.5 years,
2 years, 1.5 years, and 1 year since admission 98.2%, 99.2%, 99.8%, 100%,
100% of the first, second, third, fourth and fifth level respectively will get
bachelor degrees in engineering. In addition, the average number of students
that are expected to get a bachelor degree in engineer in the next five years
from the academic year 2012/ 2013 to 2016/ 2017 is 2196 students
