The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of a counseling program
based upon emotional competency in reducing aggressive behavior and
improving self- esteem among elementary stage students. The sample of the
study consisted of (30) participants of Eighth, Ninth and Tenth grades, in
Qaser Al- Hallabat Algharbi School located in the Second Zarqa Educational
District, which scored high on the aggressive behavior scale.
Participants were randomly distributed into two groups: experimental
and control. The experimental group consisted of 15 participants who received
counseling program based on emotional competency. The program consisted
of (12) sessions, and lasted for seven weeks, whereas, the participants in the
control group, which included 15 participants, did not receive any counseling
training. The participants in the two groups responded to the aggressive
behavior scale and self- esteem scale before and after applying the program
and after a follow- up period.
The results of this study revealed significant differences in favor of the
experimental group in reducing aggressive behavior, and improving selfesteem,
in the post and follow- up measurements.
