Assessment of the Daily Consumption of Food Groups among Nursing Students in Gaza Strip

This study aimed to assess the daily consumption of different food groups
among nursing students in the Gaza Strip. Study samples consisted of 93
subjects from the college of nursing at the Islamic university of Gaza (IUG)
and 59 subjects from Palestine college of nursing (PCN), Khan Younus. Systematic
random sample was used to select the subjects from both colleges of
nursing. Every student in the sample recorded his normal daily food intake
in a given structural food record for three successive days. SPSS WIN was
used to analyze the data. Results of the study showed that eighty percent
(80%) males and 46% females among nursing students at IUG consumed
2 servings or more daily of meat and meat alternates group. In comparison
with, 82.3 % of males and 44 % of females from PCN. Twenty seven percent
(27%) males and 33% females among nursing students at IUG consumed
2 servings or more daily of milk and milk products group. In comparison
with 14.6 % of males and 16 % of females from PCN. Ninety nine percent
(99%) males and 82% females among nursing students at IUG consumed
4 servings or more daily of grains group. In comparison with 97% of males
and 84% of females from PCN. Forty seven percent (47%) males and 56%
females among nursing students at IUG consumed 4 servings or more daily
of fruits/vegetables group. In comparison with 67.7% of males and 36 % of
females from PCN.
In conclusion, the amounts of daily consumption of meat (esp. for females),
milk/ milk products, and vegetables/fruits among Nursing students in
Gaza Strip are significantly low. Thus, the study indicates that the university
students in the Gaza strip may be at risk of specific essential nutrients such
as iron, protein, calcium, fibers, and vitamins.
