Abstract

The education of women and women's employment are both the most

important factors which affect fertility and family size. Most previous

research concentrates attention on the education of woman and how it affects

family size. This research concentrates on studying the relationship between

women’s labor force participation and average family size in the province of

Aleppo which is located in the Syrian Arabic Republic to determine about how

women's employment affects family size and childbearing behavior because of

the great importance of studying such demographic phenomenon. This study

relied on the results of questionnaire which was designed for this purpose

and includes a sample of employed married women in 2011. These results

show an inverse relationship between woman participation in economic

activity and the average number of children in the family. Also these results

show an inverse relationship between their income and their education level,

or qualification, the number of daily hours worked and type of occupation or

activity that are practiced by women from one side and average number of

children in their families on the other side.

Finally, a set of proposals and recommendations were affered to improve

the status of employed women in Aleppo in order to have the ability to cope

with their duties inside and outside the house.
