Keywords:

This research studies the social and economic characteristics of women
of reproductive age in Al- Mayadeen city in Deir al- Zour province, and it
shows the effects of these characteristics on fertility by examining a sample
of 300 married women of reproductive age.
This research shows us the low educational reality for these women
where the percentage of primary school graduates or below is (%44. 7) . It
also shows the low economic reality, where the percentage of economically
active women is %26. While fertility raises up to (5. 30) children. This is due
to the powerful anthropological background of population on the one hand,
and to the decrease of family planning usage, on the other.
The results of multiple regression analysis show that most of the variables
included in the study have a significant effect on the number of children.
These variables (age at first marriage for women – women›s educationwomen›
s work- the desired number of children) altogether explain % 33.
4 of the difference in the number of children, where (age at first marriage
for women- women›s education- women›s work) have inverse relationship
with the number of children, and (the desired number of children) has direct
relationship with the number of children. On the other hand, the study does
not show a significant statistical relationship of family planning and kinship
variables with the number of children
This study concludes that age at first marriage for a woman is the most
affecting factor on fertility in this city, followed by the desired number of
children, then by educational level, and finally by work.
Therefore, it is important to help the advancement of women of
reproductive age in the city through encouraging literacy classes, as well
as spreading population awareness, and pointing out the effects of early
marriages and high fertility on women firstly and then secondly on the
community.
